I was cleaning my office the other day (it never seems to make a difference) and I found my copy of Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. I wonder if business people today know or practice those habits.

Covey describes the first three habits: Be Proactive, Begin With The End In Mind and Put First Things First, as “private victories”. These habits cause us to go “from dependence to independence by taking responsibility for our own lives”. The next three: Seek To Understand, Then Be Understood; Think “Win/Win” and Synergize, Covey describes as “Public Victories”. Here Covey says “Once independent, we learn to be interdependent, to succeed with other people.” About the seventh habit, Sharpen The Saw, Covey says “(It) makes all the others possible – periodically renewing ourselves in mind, body and spirit.”

This seventh habit interests me the most, especially this time of year. Summertime, a number of our neighbors have gone north for their summer vacations, business tends to slow a bit and we have more time to devote to sharpening our saws. I’ve searched around and found a number of ways we can sharpen our saws throughout the summer. I’ve listed some that are taking place in the next couple weeks but visiting the websites noted will show more workshops for the rest of the summer and the year. Take advantage of these, all are at no charge and some include lunch.
